Top Basement Remodeling Mistakes
Everyone makes mistakes--afterall, we're only human, right? When it comes to remodeling your basement, we've compiled a list of the top mistakes for you below so that you can avoid some of the misfortune experienced by other homeowners trying to beautify their homes. Since the most important part of taking on a large remodel is to do your homework and research, this list is a good place to start.
1. Not Planning Space Properly
Before you hammer in the first nail, you should carefully consider the overall layout of your basement space. Make sure that you understand that you will need extra room for utilities such as heating and cooling units, water heaters, etc. You want to make sure you'll be able to conceal these units so you must make sure you have adequate space to do so. Further, if you decide you'd like to section of the space into rooms, make sure the rooms are big enough in size to be comfortable. Homeowners often pan too many rooms in one space causing the overall basement to be uncomfortable and cramped.
2. Do it Yourself - Are you Qualified?
Remodeling a basement is not an easy project and should not be taken on unless you have significant experience in home remodeling and renovations. Even if you do have experience, it is often a good idea to sub out some of the work to professionals (ie electrical wiring, structural analysis, etc).
3. Hiring the Right Contractor
It is important to note that especially in the case of basement remodeling or basement finishing, you should not always go with the lowest bid. Make sure you check your contractor's references and that they carry proper state licensing and insurance. Don't cut corners on cost in this arena or you'll be paying more in the long run. 4. Not Completing the Job, Poor Budgeting and Planning
This is one of the worst mistakes you can make because it is the most frustrating. The last thing you want to do is sink a bunch of money into a project only to have it never come to completion. To avoid this costly mistake, be sure to carefully plan your project ahead of time. Write a list of all the features you'd like and make sure your budget can accommodate.
5. Disregarding the Current Style of your Home
When adding additional space to your home, it is important to think from a design perspective. If your home is more of a contemporary design, you want to make sure you follow that trend into the basement. Doing this will make the room feel more natural and also increase your home's value. If your budget allows, it is a good idea to seek the help of an interior designer to tackle this aspect of the project.
